Understanding Your Condition

What is dysphagia?

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing — when the process of moving food, liquid, or saliva from the mouth to the stomach doesn't work smoothly or safely. It can affect adolescents and adults of any age, arising from a wide range of neurological, structural, and medical conditions.

Common causes include stroke, Parkinson's disease, dementia, head and neck cancer, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and the natural changes of ageing. Left unmanaged, dysphagia can lead to aspiration pneumonia, dehydration, malnutrition, and significant social isolation.

Safe Swallowing infographic: the five stages of a swallow (food is prepared, swallow is triggered, airway is protected, food moves to the stomach, breathing continues) and tips that help: sit upright, take small bites and sips, chew well, and stay calm

Family members Advocates Support coordinators Plan managers National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and local area coordinators

Working with your plan

Speech pathology supports for swallowing are typically funded under Capacity Building in your NDIS plan. We welcome participants who are plan-managed or self-managed.

We provide clear service agreements, progress reporting, and the documentation your support coordinator or the NDIA may need for plan reviews — so your funding works as hard as it should for you.
